Easter in the mountains 2023
Easter in 2023 falls on one of the first weekends of April. They are also an opportunity to enjoy a slightly longer weekend. The time set aside for traditional Easter celebrations - the blessing of food and gatherings with family - is worth combining with leisure, which at this time can be a fantastic opportunity for springtime exploration of the Tatra valleys and the crocuses hiding in them. The favorable weather, the increasingly longer days and the family atmosphere of the holidays is the perfect time to go to the mountains or enjoy the view of the Tatra Mountains a little further.
Easter customs in Podhale
Highland Easter traditions, although similar to those cultivated throughout Poland, enjoy a richer history and are strongly associated with the region and the culture of the Podhale people. Easter-related rituals often originated on Palm Sunday, for which specially decorated willow branches, known as "bazicka," were prepared to be consecrated. Their origin was closely linked to the widely practiced agriculture and the belief that "bazicki" bring good luck and guarantee fertility in the field. An important day during Easter is Saturday's traditional blessing of food. The prepared "kosołek" is supposed to contain "świyncelina," or traditional foods: Easter eggs, oscypek, sausage, home-baked bread, butter, salt or horseradish root. An important role is also played by the decoration of the basket, which often includes an embroidered napkin, catkins, boxwood, fresh flowers and colorful ribbons. The whole thing expresses joy and symbolizes the rebirth of life. Easter Sunday, which follows Saturday, is the time of the most important celebration, which brings families together to this day for a meal and prayer. On Easter Monday, of course, the traditional "polewacka," or pouring water on each other, which, especially for girls, guaranteed beauty and the promise of quick marriage.
